Tub sizing is one of the most common questions in corn snake keeping — and one of the easiest to get wrong. Too small and your animal doesn't have enough room to thermoregulate properly. Too large and hatchlings feel exposed, stop feeding, and stress out. Get it right and your corn snakes thrive in a rack from hatchling to adult. Here's how to think through tub sizing at every life stage.
Why Tub Size Matters for Corn Snakes
Corn snakes are active, curious colubrids that move around their enclosure more than many other commonly rack-kept species. Unlike ball pythons, which are content to sit in a hide for days at a time, corn snakes explore regularly and benefit from having enough floor space to move, establish a thermal gradient between warm and cool ends, and behave naturally.
At the same time, a tub that's too large — especially for hatchlings and juveniles — creates a stress environment. Young corn snakes in oversized tubs feel exposed and insecure, which leads directly to feeding refusals. The right tub size keeps the animal secure without restricting their ability to move and thermoregulate.
Hatchling Corn Snakes
Hatchling corn snakes need a small, secure tub from day one. A 6qt equivalent tub is the standard starting point for most breeders — it's tight enough that the hatchling feels secure, small enough that heat distribution is even across the whole tub, and easy to monitor for feeding response and health.
The most common mistake with hatchling corn snakes is starting them in a tub that's too large because it seems like it will last longer before an upgrade is needed. A hatchling corn snake in a 28qt tub has too much open space to feel secure. It will hide in a corner, refuse food, and stress. Start small and move up as the animal grows.
Juvenile Corn Snakes
As corn snakes grow through their first year, they'll move through one or two tub size upgrades before reaching adult size. The general rule is that the tub should be large enough for the snake to stretch out along one side but not so large that there's significant open space the animal has to cross to get from hide to hide.
Most breeders move juvenile corn snakes into a 12–16qt equivalent tub as they grow out of the hatchling setup, then step up again as the animal approaches sub-adult size. Watching feeding response is the best indicator of whether a tub upgrade is working — a corn snake that's eating consistently in its current tub is in the right size setup.
Adult Corn Snakes
Adult corn snakes typically reach 3–5 feet in length. For adults, floor footprint becomes the priority — a wide, flat tub is better than a tall narrow one. Corn snakes don't need height in a rack tub; they need enough floor space to establish a clear warm side and cool side and to move between them naturally.
The 28–41qt equivalent tub range is where most experienced corn snake breeders land for adults. A tub in this range gives a 3–5 foot corn snake enough room to move and thermoregulate comfortably without excess open space that works against security.
Some breeders with larger females — corn snakes can occasionally push past 5 feet, particularly in larger morphs and hybrids — move up to a 55qt equivalent tub for more floor space. This is less common but worth knowing if you're running larger animals.
The Importance of Floor Footprint Over Volume
When comparing tub sizes for corn snakes, look at the floor dimensions — length and width — rather than the quart volume. Two tubs with the same quart volume can have very different floor footprints depending on how tall they are. For corn snakes in a rack system, you want a tub that's wide and flat, not tall and narrow.
ARS tubs are designed with rack keeping in mind — the floor dimensions are optimized for the kind of belly heat and horizontal movement that rack-kept snakes need. The ARS 55-Series tub, at 33"D x 13"W x 5.25"H, hits the right balance for most adult corn snakes — enough floor space without excess height that goes unused in a rack tub.
What Goes in the Tub
Whatever tub size you're running, the setup inside is the same: substrate across the floor, a warm-side hide directly over the heat tape, a cool-side hide on the opposite end, and a water dish. Corn snakes need 40–60% humidity — lower than tropical species, which makes rack management straightforward — and a warm side of 85–88°F with a cool side in the upper 70s provided by ambient room temperature.
Keep the hide sized appropriately for the animal. A hide that's too large defeats the purpose — the snake needs to feel the sides of the hide against its body to feel secure. As the snake grows, upgrade the hide alongside the tub.
Adding UVB to a Corn Snake Setup
Corn snakes are more consistently basking-inclined than ball pythons and generally benefit from moderate UVB exposure if you choose to add lighting. The Right Tub Size for Your Corn Snake — In the Best Rack Available
Now that you know the right tub size for your corn snake, the rack that holds it matters just as much as the tub itself. A cheap rack with poor tub fit creates temperature inconsistency, security gaps, and maintenance headaches that undermine everything else you are doing right in your husbandry. The rack is not an afterthought — it is the infrastructure your entire setup runs on.
Rack Theory builds American-made black PVC corn snake racks in South Georgia. ARS 70-Series tubs, heat tape included, built from true 1/2" black PVC to tolerances that hold for decades. The Core 70-5 and Glow 70-4 are the best production rack options available for corn snake keepers and breeders in the United States.
Get the tub right and get the rack right: Core 70-5 for a clean five-tub colubrid setup, or Glow 70-4 if you want T5 UVB built in. American-made, built in Georgia, ships nationwide with free ground shipping on orders over $200.
