These aren't small engineering considerations, and it's part of why the category has taken longer to develop compared to terrestrial rack systems, which had a much more direct path from tub dimensions to finished product.

Species-Specific Nuance Within "Arboreal"

It's also worth noting that arboreal species themselves aren't a single uniform category with identical needs. For keepers currently housing arboreal species, a dedicated vertically oriented enclosure — whether a front-opening terrarium or a purpose-built arboreal cage — remains the appropriate housing choice until a genuinely suitable rack-based option exists. This isn't a compromise so much as matching the animal's actual needs to available housing options as they currently stand.

If you're running a mixed collection, there's no conflict in housing your terrestrial species — ball pythons, corn snakes, boas, kingsnakes, and similar species — in standard racks while keeping arboreal species in appropriate vertical enclosures elsewhere in your reptile room. Racks and vertical enclosures aren't competing systems; they're each suited to different categories of animal, and a serious multi-species collection often uses both.

How This Compares to the Terrestrial Rack Category's Own History

It's worth remembering that terrestrial rack systems weren't always the mature, standardized category they are today either — early rack designs went through real iteration before arriving at the tub dimensions, heat delivery methods, and stacking systems that are now considered standard across the industry. There's a reasonable path from where the category stands today to a genuinely solid product, it just requires the same kind of careful, iterative development terrestrial racks went through rather than skipping ahead to a rushed version.
