Rack Theory now runs four rack configurations, not two — which makes the old "Core vs. Glow" question really two separate decisions: do you want a lighting cutout, and which tub size fits your animals? Here's the full breakdown across all four racks so you can pick the right one without guessing.
Two Decisions, Not One
The lineup splits along two independent lines. Core vs. Glow is about lighting: Core has no lighting cutout, Glow has a screen cutout built in for a 12" T5 UVB fixture. 70-Series vs. 55-Series is about tub size: the 70-Series tub is wider (17.625"W), the 55-Series is narrower (13"W). Combine those two choices and you get the four current racks:
Core 70-5 — $849.99 — 5 ARS 70-Series tubs, no lighting, 34.5"L x 19.5"W x 30.5"H
Core 55-5 — $739.99 — 5 ARS 55-Series tubs, no lighting, 34.5"L x 15.5"W x 30.5"H
Glow 70-4 — $924.99 — 4 ARS 70-Series tubs, UVB cutout, 34.5"L x 19.5"W x 35.25"H
Glow 55-4 — $924.99 — 4 ARS 55-Series tubs, UVB cutout, 34.5"L x 19.5"W x 35.25"H
What's the Same Across All Four
Every rack in the lineup shares the same foundation regardless of which combination you pick. All four are built from true 1/2" black PVC. All four ship with 6" heat tape pre-installed — thermostat required, sold separately. All four include locking casters. All four are flat-packed and assemble with a standard Phillips screwdriver. All four are built to order in Georgia and ship within one week. The construction quality, the material, the heat setup — identical across the board. You're choosing tub size and lighting, not choosing between different quality tiers.
Decision One: Core or Glow — Do You Need Lighting?
Glow racks add a screen cutout sized for a standard 12" T5 UVB fixture, built directly into the rack — no drilling, no retrofitting, no aftermarket mesh. The fixture itself isn't included and is sold separately. Because that cutout needs vertical clearance, Glow racks run four tubs at a taller 35.25" instead of five tubs at 30.5" — one fewer tub position in exchange for lighting flexibility on every level.
Core is the right call if you're not running supplemental UVB — most traditional ball python operations fall here, since the species doesn't require it and a clean five-tub setup maximizes capacity per rack. Glow makes more sense if you're keeping diurnal species like hognose snakes or kingsnakes where the case for UVB is stronger, or if there's a real chance you'll want lighting later. Retrofitting a cutout into an existing Core rack isn't practical, so if you're on the fence, Glow is the safer starting point. Decision Two: 70-Series or 55-Series — What Tub Size Do You Need?
The 70-Series tub (33"D x 17.625"W x 5.25"H) is the wider footprint, sized for adult ball pythons, large colubrids, and similarly proportioned adult snakes. The 55-Series tub (33"D x 13"W x 5.25"H) is narrower — well suited to sub-adults, juveniles transitioning out of hatchling housing, or smaller-bodied adult species that don't need the full 70-Series floor space.
Mismatching tub size to animal size in either direction means wasted space or a cramped animal, so this decision should be driven by what's actually going in the rack, not a general preference for bigger being better. Many breeders run both sizes side by side — 55-Series for sub-adults and smaller species, 70-Series for full adults — all under the same lighting approach. A direct side-by-side comparison of the two Glow options specifically is worth a look if you're deciding between lighting-ready sizes: Glow 70-4 vs. Glow 55-4.
Price Comparison
Core 55-5 is the least expensive option at $739.99, followed by Core 70-5 at $849.99. Both Glow racks — 70-4 and 55-4 — are priced identically at $924.99, since the added cost comes from the lighting cutout and shelf clearance rather than tub size. The jump from Core to Glow within the same tub size runs roughly $75–$185 depending on which Core you're comparing against, buying you UVB flexibility on every level of the rack whether or not you use it immediately.
What About Room Height?
Glow racks run 35.25" tall versus 30.5" for Core — nearly five inches of additional height per unit. In a room with standard 8-foot ceilings this rarely matters, but if you're working with a lower ceiling, planning to stack racks, or fitting into a specific shelving footprint, that height difference is worth factoring in before you order, regardless of which tub size you choose.
Can You Mix All Four in the Same Room?
Yes — and many serious rack rooms do exactly that. A common setup runs Core for the bulk of a ball python collection where UVB isn't a priority, Glow for diurnal species or breeding females where lighting matters most, and a mix of 70-Series and 55-Series tubs depending on life stage and species size within each. Because every configuration shares the same true 1/2" black PVC build and the same ARS tub ecosystem, mixing all four in one room stays consistent — same material, same heat tape setup, same assembly — even as the specific tub size and lighting choice varies rack to rack.
The Simple Decision Framework
Start with lighting: do you need UVB now, or is there a real chance you will later? That answers Core vs. Glow. Then match tub size to the actual animals going in the rack: adult-sized species get the 70-Series, sub-adults and smaller species get the 55-Series. Answer both questions honestly and the right rack out of the four is usually obvious.
Filling Your Rack
Deciding on the right rack is only half the equation if you're still growing your collection. Ghost Constrictors, a South Georgia ball python breeder, ships captive-bred ball pythons nationwide with a live arrival guarantee, which pairs naturally with any of these four configurations once you've settled on the right setup for your room.

Four Configurations, One American-Made Standard
Every Rack Theory rack — Core or Glow, 70-Series or 55-Series — is built on the same foundation: true 1/2" black PVC, ARS tubs, heat tape included, American-made in South Georgia, one-week build time. The difference between the four comes down to tub size and lighting, not build quality.
If you keep nocturnal species and lighting isn't a priority, Core is your line. If you keep diurnal species — hognose, kingsnakes, corn snakes — or want full-spectrum lighting built in from the start, Glow is built for you. Match that to the tub size your animals actually need, and you've got the right rack.
