Full-Spectrum Lighting Setup Checklist: A Step-by-Step Guide for New Rack Owners

Between bulb selection, output percentages, mesh choice, mounting distance, and timer setup, a first-time lighting-ready rack owner has a lot of individual decisions to make. Pulled together into a single checklist, the process is more straightforward than it looks scattered across separate topics — here's the order that actually makes sense to work through it in.

Step 1: Identify Your Species' UVB Need

Before buying anything, know roughly where your species falls on the UVB need spectrum — low for fossorial species like ball pythons, moderate for corn snakes and kingsnakes, higher for strongly basking species like hognose snakes. This single decision drives your bulb output choice and shapes most of what follows, so it's worth getting right before moving to any purchase.

Step 2: Confirm Your Rack's Shelf Clearance and Cutout Sizing

If you're working with a lighting-ready rack, this is already handled — shelf spacing and screen cutout are sized for standard T5 HO fixtures from the start. If you're retrofitting an existing rack instead, confirm you have adequate vertical clearance for a fixture at a safe mounting distance before cutting anything, since this is the step most likely to force a redesign if skipped.

Step 3: Choose a T5 HO Fixture and Bulb

Select a fixture sized to your tub width, generally in the 22-24 inch range for standard rack tubs, and a bulb output matching the species need identified in Step 1. Favor bulbs with published, independent UV Index test data over percentage claims alone, and pair the bulb with a fixture that includes a proper reflector rather than a bare bulb holder.

Step 4: Choose Your Screen Material

If your rack's cutout requires a mesh cover, choose reptile-specific UVB-transparent mesh rather than standard window screen, which can block a substantial portion of UVB output before it reaches the animal. Confirm the mesh is sized and fitted correctly to the cutout, without gaps or slack that could compromise containment.

Step 5: Install and Verify Mounting Distance

Mount the fixture at the distance specified in the bulb manufacturer's chart for your specific output percentage, measured from the fixture to the tub floor or substrate surface — not to the top of the tub. If possible, verify actual delivered UV Index with a meter at this stage, giving you a baseline reading to compare against as the bulb ages.

Step 6: Set Up Photoperiod Control

Install a timer — mechanical, digital, or app-controlled depending on the size of your setup — and set a consistent 10-12 hour photoperiod as a starting point for most rack-kept colubrid and boid species. For a multi-tub room, group fixtures onto shared timers by rack level where wiring allows, to keep the whole room on a consistent schedule.

Step 7: Provide Adequate Hide Options

Especially for cover-seeking species like ball pythons, make sure the tub includes hide options that let the animal choose its own UV exposure gradient rather than forcing full exposure as the only alternative to a bare corner. This applies to a lesser degree even for more basking-inclined species, which still benefit from at least one retreat option.

Step 8: Log the Install Date

Before moving on to the next tub, record the bulb's install date somewhere you'll actually reference later — a labeled fixture, a spreadsheet, a shared calendar reminder set to the bulb's rated UVB lifespan. This single habit is what turns bulb replacement from a guessing game into a scheduled, predictable task.

Step 9: Reassess Supplementation

With lighting now in place, revisit your calcium and D3 supplementation routine — most keepers maintain calcium dusting while reducing D3-specific supplementation frequency once reliable UVB lighting is running, to avoid stacking two D3 sources unintentionally.

Step 10: Observe and Adjust

Over the first few weeks, watch how the animal actually uses the lit space — normal movement between cover and open areas, consistent feeding, no unusual avoidance or hovering directly under the fixture. Use these observations to fine-tune placement or output if something looks off, rather than assuming the initial setup is automatically correct just because it followed the checklist.

Common Mistakes That Skip a Step

The most frequent mistake we see is skipping straight to Step 3 — buying a bulb — without first pinning down Step 1's species-specific output need or Step 2's clearance check. Working through the steps in order, rather than jumping to the part that feels most like "shopping," avoids the majority of setup problems we hear about from other keepers.

Adapting the Checklist for a Multi-Tub Rollout

Steps 5 through 9 still need per-tub attention, since mounting distance and install-date tracking are tub-specific even when the underlying bulb choice is shared across a group.
