T5 HO fluorescent isn't the only lighting technology capable of producing UVB, and keepers researching options for a rack system will inevitably run into mercury vapor and metal halide bulbs as alternatives. Each has real advantages in specific contexts — and real drawbacks that make them a poor fit for most rack setups.

Mercury Vapor Bulbs: Heat and Light in One

Mercury vapor bulbs combine UVB output with significant heat output in a single self-ballasted bulb, which makes them popular in large, tall enclosures where a single fixture can both heat and light a big basking area. That combined function is exactly what makes them a poor match for rack tubs: the heat output is substantial and difficult to modulate independently of the light, and rack tubs typically already have dedicated heat sources like heat tape that are far easier to control with a thermostat. Layering an unregulated heat-emitting bulb on top of an existing, thermostat-controlled heat source risks overheating a tub that has limited internal volume to dissipate that heat.

Metal Halide: Intensity Built for Height

Metal halide UVB bulbs are typically used in tall, naturalistic enclosures where a fixture needs to project strong UVB output over a significant vertical distance — several feet in some setups. That's the opposite of what a rack tub needs. Rack shelf spacing is measured in inches, not feet, and a bulb designed to deliver its rated output from three or four feet away will massively over-deliver at the much shorter distances involved in a rack system, creating a real overexposure risk for an animal with limited ability to retreat from the light source.

Why T5 HO Fits Rack Geometry Better

T5 HO fluorescent tubes are designed to deliver appropriate UVB output at shorter distances — typically in the 6 to 18 inch range, depending on bulb strength — which lines up far more naturally with rack shelf spacing than either mercury vapor or metal halide. This isn't a coincidence: T5 HO's popularity in the reptile-keeping world in general has been driven partly by exactly this kind of enclosure geometry match, since most keepers, rack-based or not, are working with more modest vertical clearances than a walk-in naturalistic display.

Heat Management Considerations

Beyond UVB delivery distance, heat is the other major differentiator. T5 HO tubes run considerably cooler than mercury vapor or metal halide bulbs, which matters in the tighter airspace of a rack tub where excess ambient heat has fewer places to dissipate compared to an open enclosure with more air volume and often active ventilation. Pairing a rack's existing thermostat-controlled heat tape with a cool-running T5 HO fixture keeps heat and UVB as two independently controllable variables, rather than combining them into a single bulb you can't fine-tune separately.

Cost and Availability

T5 HO fixtures and bulbs are also generally more affordable and more widely available in the specific lengths and outputs suited to rack tub dimensions, compared to the narrower selection of mercury vapor and metal halide options — which tend to be manufactured with larger, taller enclosures in mind rather than compact multi-tub systems.

Ballast Type and Flicker Considerations

Electronic ballasts also run cooler and more efficiently than the magnetic ballasts found in older fixtures, which compounds the heat-management advantage T5 HO already has over mercury vapor and metal halide in a confined rack tub environment.

T5 HO fixtures typically run on electronic ballasts, which eliminate the flicker associated with older magnetic-ballast fluorescent fixtures. Flicker imperceptible to the human eye can still be detected by some reptile species, potentially contributing to stress in sensitive animals — one more small factor in T5 HO's favor over older fluorescent lighting technology, and a non-issue with mercury vapor or metal halide, which don't flicker but bring their own drawbacks as covered above.

What About Halogen or Basking Spot Bulbs?

Halogen basking bulbs and standard incandescent spot bulbs are worth mentioning separately, since they're common in reptile keeping generally but produce little to no meaningful UVB regardless of how they're marketed. These bulbs serve a heat and visible-light role only, and shouldn't be confused with or substituted for a genuine UVB source. Some keepers run a halogen basking bulb alongside a separate T5 HO UVB fixture to split heat and UVB duties between two purpose-built sources rather than expecting one bulb to do both jobs — a reasonable approach in a taller enclosure, but generally unnecessary complexity in a rack tub where heat tape already handles the heating role.

When Mercury Vapor or Metal Halide Might Still Make Sense

These technologies aren't wrong for reptile keeping broadly — they're simply mismatched to rack geometry specifically. A keeper running a large, tall display enclosure alongside a rack room might reasonably use metal halide in the display tank and T5 HO throughout the racks, choosing the technology that fits each enclosure's actual dimensions rather than standardizing on one bulb type across fundamentally different housing formats.
