Housing Large Constrictors: What to Know Before You Rack a Retic or Burmese Python

A Different Category of Rack Planning Entirely

Everything discussed elsewhere on this blog about tub sizing, heat delivery, and rack configuration assumes species that top out somewhere in the 4 to 10 foot range as adults. Reticulated pythons and Burmese pythons operate on an entirely different scale — adult reticulated pythons regularly exceed 12 to 18 feet, with some individuals reported well beyond that, and Burmese pythons commonly reach 12 to 16 feet at full adult size. Planning rack housing for these species means thinking through genuinely different constraints than standard adult sizing for a ball python or boa constrictor.

Why Standard Adult Tubs Don't Apply

Our ARS 70-Series tub, appropriate for the vast majority of commonly kept adult snake species including full-grown boa constrictors, is built around species that top out in a range where 33 inches of tub depth accommodates comfortable coiling and stretching. A full adult reticulated or Burmese python is operating at a scale where standard tub dimensions, even our largest current option, don't provide adequate space for an animal of that size to express natural movement and thermoregulation.

This isn't a limitation specific to our current lineup — it's a limitation of rack-tub housing at standard dimensions generally, for a species whose adult size exceeds what almost any tub-based system, from any manufacturer, is built to accommodate comfortably.

Where Rack Housing Does Make Sense for Giant Species

Rack housing isn't off the table entirely for reticulated and Burmese pythons — it's a question of life stage. Hatchling and juvenile giant constrictors are a completely different sizing conversation than adults, and rack housing works well through a meaningful portion of this species' early growth, using progressively larger tub sizes as the animal grows, similar to the progression used for other species but compressed into a shorter timeframe given how quickly giant constrictors grow relative to more moderate-growth species.

Budgeting and planning for this transition early, rather than reacting once the animal has clearly outgrown available tub space, keeps the animal's housing appropriately sized throughout its growth rather than creating a gap where the animal is temporarily under-housed while a custom solution gets built.

Weight and Structural Considerations Even at Juvenile Stages

Even before reaching adult size, giant constrictor species put on weight and muscle mass faster than most commonly kept species, meaning a rack tub housing a juvenile retic or Burmese python may be handling more physical load and more forceful movement against the tub structure than the same tub would experience housing a same-aged ball python or corn snake. This is worth factoring into how closely you monitor tub condition and structural integrity throughout the juvenile growth period for these species specifically.

Heat and Space Needs During the Rack-Appropriate Growth Window

During the period when rack tub housing is genuinely appropriate — roughly hatchling through the first year or so — heat needs for giant constrictor species aren't dramatically different from other large-bodied species: a warm side around 88-90°F with a cool side in the high 70s to low 80s°F works well. What changes faster than heat requirements is simply the rate of size transitions, since giant constrictor species move through tub sizes more quickly than moderate-growth species given how fast they pack on length and mass during early growth.

Researching Before You Commit to a Giant Species

Given everything covered here, prospective giant constrictor keepers benefit from researching the full adult housing and safety picture before acquiring a hatchling, rather than discovering the scale of long-term commitment partway through the animal's growth. A reticulated or Burmese python purchased as an appealing, manageable hatchling will, with proper husbandry, grow into an animal requiring a genuinely different level of housing investment, space, and handling protocol than nearly any other commonly kept snake species.

Safety Considerations Specific to Giant Species

Beyond housing logistics, keepers of reticulated and Burmese pythons take on genuinely different safety responsibilities than keepers of more moderately sized species, given the physical capability of a large adult constrictor. This is worth researching thoroughly and taking seriously well before an animal reaches a size where handling risk becomes a real factor — proper restraint technique, never handling alone once an animal reaches a certain size, and realistic honesty about whether your specific setup and experience level are appropriate for keeping a species that will eventually reach that scale.

Feeding Considerations During Rapid Early Growth

Giant constrictor species are fed on a more aggressive schedule during early growth than most moderate-growth species, in part because their genetic potential for rapid size increase means an underfed juvenile retic or Burmese python can fall noticeably behind its growth curve compared to a well-fed one. This faster feeding and growth pace is part of why tub-size transitions come faster for these species than for something like a corn snake or kingsnake — you're not just managing a bigger eventual adult size, you're managing a compressed timeline to get there during the juvenile stages where rack housing still applies.

Being Honest About What Rack Housing Can and Can't Do

We'd rather be direct about this than oversell rack housing as a complete solution for giant constrictor species: racks work well for the early growth stages of reticulated and Burmese pythons, and poorly, or not at all, once these animals approach their genuinely enormous adult size. Planning your housing progression with that reality in mind from the start makes for a much smoother experience than discovering the limitation partway through raising the animal.
