A Species Built Almost Entirely Around Substrate
Sand boas — most commonly the Kenyan sand boa in the pet trade, though several other species and locales are available — are among the most dedicated burrowers in the snake-keeping hobby. Unlike species that burrow occasionally or use cover opportunistically, sand boas spend the overwhelming majority of their time beneath the substrate surface, emerging primarily to strike at prey or briefly bask. Setting up a rack tub for this species successfully means designing around substrate depth as the primary consideration, more than any other species covered on this blog.
Adult Size and Tub Selection
Sand boas are small, thick-bodied snakes with a notable size difference between sexes — males typically stay in the 14 to 20 inch range, while females are substantially larger, often reaching 24 to 30 inches with a noticeably heavier, more robust build. Despite the length difference, both sexes are short and stocky compared to their length, meaning even adult female sand boas don't require the floor footprint that a longer, more active species of similar weight would need.

Substrate Depth: The Most Important Setup Decision
This is where sand boa husbandry diverges most from almost every other species in this blog. Sand boas need substantially deeper substrate than a species that burrows occasionally or not at all — typically 3 to 5 inches of loose, fine-grained material, deep enough for the animal to fully submerge and move through the substrate the way it would through loose desert sand in the wild. This is meaningfully deeper than the light substrate layer appropriate for a species like a hognose or rosy boa that burrows opportunistically rather than living beneath the surface.
The 5.25 inch tub height on our ARS tub series accommodates this deeper substrate layer while still leaving enough air space above for proper ventilation, but it's worth being deliberate about substrate depth specifically for this species — under-filling a sand boa's tub is one of the more common setup mistakes we hear about from keepers moving from other species into sand boas for the first time.
Choosing the Right Substrate Material
Play sand, a sand and soil blend, or a specialized burrowing substrate mix all work well for sand boas, with the key property being fine grain size that allows the animal to move through it freely rather than displacing large chunks of material with each movement. Avoid substrates that are too coarse or that clump excessively when damp, since sand boas are pushing through this material constantly as part of their normal behavior, not just occasionally digging into it.
Heat and Humidity for a True Desert Species
Sand boas are native to arid, semi-arid grassland and savanna environments across East Africa and parts of Asia and the Middle East depending on species, and their captive husbandry should reflect genuinely dry conditions. A warm side around 88-92°F with a cool side in the mid-to-high 70s°F works well, with ambient humidity kept low — generally in the 30-40% range, since excess humidity in a deep-substrate sand boa setup can lead to substrate compaction and mold issues that are harder to detect given how much of the tub's contents are hidden beneath the surface at any given time.
Because heat needs to penetrate down through several inches of substrate for a burrowing species to access appropriate warmth, consistent, well-regulated heat tape placement matters more here than it does for a surface-dwelling species. Feeding and Observation Challenges
Because sand boas spend so much of their time buried, monitoring feeding response and general health can be less straightforward than with a more visible species. Most keepers feed sand boas by placing prey on the substrate surface near a known burrow entrance rather than expecting the animal to be visibly active at feeding time, and periodic substrate checks — gently checking for the animal's presence and body condition — become a more routine part of husbandry than they would be for a species you can simply observe through the side of the tub.
Do Sand Boas Need UVB?
Given how much time sand boas spend beneath the substrate surface, UVB has a weaker practical case here than it does for more surface-active, basking species like boa constrictors or hognose snakes. A snake that's rarely at the surface isn't positioned to benefit much from overhead UVB exposure regardless of species-level need. Most keepers house sand boas without UVB, though the option remains available through our Glow 55-4 for anyone who wants it as part of a broader naturalistic approach.
Sexing and Collection Planning
Because male and female sand boas differ so significantly in adult size, keepers planning a sand boa collection often factor sex into their rack planning from early on, particularly if breeding is part of the long-term goal. Males, staying in the smaller 14 to 20 inch range, can sometimes be housed in slightly more conservative setups than females, though most keepers standardize on the ARS 55-Series tub across both sexes for consistency, given that it comfortably accommodates the larger female size range with room to spare for males. This consistency simplifies rack planning considerably compared to species where sex-based size differences would require entirely different tub categories.
