For a lot of keepers, that number gets treated as a single dial — higher is stronger, lower is safer, pick something in the middle and move on. That's not quite how it works, and getting it wrong in a rack system carries different stakes than in an open display enclosure, because rack tubs give an animal far less room to retreat from a light source it's getting too much of.
What the Percentage Actually Measures
The percentage on a UVB bulb refers to its UVB output relative to its total light output at a given distance — it's a measure of intensity, not a universal "dose" that applies the same way regardless of setup. The same 5% bulb delivers meaningfully different UV index readings at six inches versus eighteen inches from the animal. Percentage tells you about the bulb; distance and tub depth tell you about the actual exposure the animal receives.
This is why two keepers can both buy a "correctly rated" bulb for the same species and end up with very different real-world results — one mounted the fixture at the distance the manufacturer specified, and the other estimated based on what fit the available clearance.
Low Output: 2-6%
This range covers most of what's appropriate for rack-kept colubrids and boids that fall into Ferguson Zone 1 or the lower end of Zone 2 — species like ball pythons, corn snakes in shaded portions of their range, and boas. These bulbs are forgiving of moderate distance variation and are the safest starting point for species that spend meaningful time in cover in the wild.
Moderate Output: 6-10%
This band suits more consistently basking species — hognose snakes, more active kingsnakes, and similar species that spend real time in open sun rather than filtered shade. At this output, distance and mounting height start to matter more, since the margin between "insufficient" and "excessive" narrows as intensity increases.
Higher Output: 10%+
Bulbs in this range are generally aimed at strongly basking reptiles — many lizard species, for instance — and are rarely the right choice for the snake species typically kept in racks. If you find yourself reaching for a 10%+ bulb for a colubrid or boid, it's worth double-checking the species' actual UV requirements rather than assuming stronger is simply better. Overexposure carries its own health risks, including UV-related skin and eye irritation.
Why Distance Changes Everything
UV output falls off sharply with distance — not in a straight line, but closer to an inverse-square relationship, meaning small changes in mounting height produce outsized changes in the UV index reaching the animal. A bulb mounted twice as far away doesn't deliver half the UVB; it can deliver closer to a quarter. This is precisely why generic placement advice ("mount it a few inches above the screen") is less useful than the specific distance chart provided by the bulb manufacturer for that model and output percentage.
In a rack system, this problem is compounded by shelf spacing. A fixture that would sit at an ideal distance in a tall display enclosure may be forced much closer to the animal in a rack's shorter vertical clearance, which is one more reason percentage alone is an incomplete way to shop for a bulb.
Matching Output to Screen Cutout Size
The size and mesh density of the screen cutout the light passes through also affects delivered UVB, independent of the bulb's rated percentage. A cutout sized correctly for the fixture, with an appropriately open mesh, preserves more of the bulb's rated output than a narrow or heavily-meshed opening. This is one of the reasons a rack designed around a specific fixture size — rather than a generic aftermarket screen patch — tends to produce more predictable, consistent results.
Common Mistakes When Buying by Percentage Alone
The most common error we see is keepers upgrading to a higher percentage bulb after a low reading, without first checking whether the actual problem is mounting distance or screen mesh loss rather than bulb strength. Jumping from a 5% to a 10% bulb to compensate for a fixture mounted too far away can just as easily create an overexposure problem once the mounting is eventually corrected. The percentage, the distance, and the screen cutout should be diagnosed together, not treated as separate variables to adjust one at a time by trial and error.
Measuring Instead of Guessing
The most reliable way to know what a bulb is actually delivering at a given distance is to measure it directly with a UV index meter, rather than relying on the manufacturer's chart alone. Meters designed for reptile keeping read UV Index at the basking surface, which accounts for the bulb, the distance, the screen cutout, and any mesh loss all at once — the combination of variables that percentage alone can't capture. For a rack room with multiple lighting-ready tubs at slightly different shelf heights, a quick meter check across a few tubs is a fast way to confirm the setup is delivering what it's supposed to, rather than assuming every position performs identically just because the bulbs are the same model.
